Surya Namaskar
Sun Salutations
© Anne Calzada Herbalist

In Hinduism, the Sun is revered and honored for giving physical life and also spiritual life. They honor the Sun, through a series of yoga asanas known as Surya Namaskar or better known as Sun Salutation. In Sanskrit, the Surya means Sun and Namaskar means salute, greeting or bow to.

The beginning pose of the series, Tadasana (Mountain Pose) starts and ends the series with your hands in prayer pose against your heart. This is your life force.

There are many different variations of Surya Namaskar, however this is the most common.

Traditionally practiced at Sunrise, this Kriya will help to strengthen all body systems and chakras! It is cleansing, strengthening and refreshing! Start with one and work up to three a day and so on!

You will be rewarding your body, mind and spirit, while simultaneously practicing world peace with Yogis all over the world!

...And if you don't want to get up at dawn, you don't have to. Just do what you can, but keep it up!

There is no competition in yoga, no judgement, no ego, just practice and breathe!

Dedicate your Surya Namaskar practice to yourself or someone that needs healing or love or even just for every living being including Earth herself!
