Lung Health Naturally...

To breathe is to live. Without our breath, we are not alive and without plants we cannot live. Plants provide oxygen for us and we exhale carbon dioxide, which they soak up. A symbiotic relationship. Sometimes when we do or try things like smoking, it reduces the capacity of our lungs. Sometimes when we are going through something sad, our lungs manifest the depth of our own grief and reflect our health in this way. The lungs are one of our largest eliminative organs. With the change of Seasons, we are all affected, because whether we know it or not, we are connected to the Earth. Pranayama, yoga, walking, running, all movement will support the health and strength of the lungs.
Autumn corresponds to the lungs and the colon in TCM, so keep in mind that roots, fibrous foods and foods high in beta carotene will help feed the lungs. These foods are spinach, kale, cilantro, parsley, sweet potatoes, yams, carrots and pumpkin as a few examples. Think spices and pungent roots as well. Cayenne, garlic, onion, ginger, chilli’s, horseradish etc...

In TCM, the emotions of grief and sorrow can manifest in the lungs. Are you experiencing sadness or a heaviness in the heart chakra area? Are you worrying too much? Give it up to God. Practice conscious breathing from your solar plexus and let go of any emotional toxins that are not in your highest good. Checking your posture or even visiting a chiropractor can improve lung capacity and function.

With every breath you take...

The Neti Pot

An ancient Ayurvedic practice of cleansing the sinuses is to use a Neti pot. It is like a tiny tea pot that contains a lukewarm salt water rinse that is cleansing and toning. You pour through one nostril over the sink and allow the rinse to drip trough the other nostril. Simple. Gentle. Effective.

4 Part Yogic Breathing

Sit up with a straight spine. Sniff in 4 breaths through your nose.

Hold.

Sniff out the 4 breaths through your nose.

Continue and work up to 8 part breathing.

Gentle. Do not overdo. This will open your sinuses and respiratory system.

There are lots of plants that support the lungs!

Lung Strength Tea

2 Part Mullein

1 Part Hyssop

½ part Peppermint

Blend and use 1 tsp per cup of water or make a strong infusion. Throw a handful into a quart jar and infuse overnight!
The lungs love Mullein!

Eucalyptus Steam

In the shower or at the table using a towel over your head! A Eucalyptus steam will help. Try using it on your feet and chest. Dilute it in a little oil first, then massage the chest area to open the lungs. Use on your feet over the lung points and sinus points! This plant is very antiviral.
