Witch, Witch, You're A Witch
By Anne Calzada Herbalist
The famous quote from the movie Practical Magic. The famous movie about true love and magic. One of my favorite movies. The Wizard Of Oz has always been my very most favorite movie since I was 5! I always loved the cowardly Lion and Glinda!
I noticed that as I became an Herbalist, that people started calling me a Witch. Now I work with people in all aspects of herbal and psychic healing. Teaching, doing health consultations, yoga consultations, tarot readings, saliva readings, psychic consultations, growing an herbal garden, doing herb walks, astrology classes, writing eBooks, my you tube channel, @starlitwithannecalzada, my patreon.com/HEALINGHEARTHERBS channel, creating herbal medicine, magic and beauty blends!
So, am I a Witch?
What is a Witch?
The word Witch carries a lot of different implications and connotations with it. I'm sure there are many debates into the origin and traditions of witchcraft. They say that the word itself is of Germanic and Old English origin. They say it means wise. Extending out into every single race, creed and culture. Every culture has had their own version of this word. Sometimes called Wiccans, Shamans, High Priestesses, Curanderas or Brujas even. I'm sure that there are many names in this world to indicate a Witch as well.
As many cultures exist, so do the belief systems of what a Witch is. We know from history that women who knew herbal medicine, delivering babies and curing the ill were looked upon as magical. Typical Herbalists and Midwives who are trained in the healing medicine of the woods, mountains and forests. Women started rising up even in the marketplace, where alewives who brewed wore a black pointy hat to advertise that they were saleswomen at the market during medieval times. Men later used these hats and images to portray women as Witch's who were viewed as evil. I believe that conical hat is an icon now.
As many cultures as there is, there re that many different types of Witches and the practices that they craft. There are female Witchs, male Witchs. Some are healers and some are hexers. Some are both. Some people work magic for themselves, and others are paid to do spells for others. Some blend ritual with their Christian faiths.
What is Witchcraft?
The belief that the Universe responds to YOUR desires. That the Universe only knows YES. The belief that reality manifests per your focus. Where your focus grows, energy flows. Advocating, petitioning, praying for yourself and loved ones. Self permission and self empowerment. Love, healing, health and beauty. Protection.
Something that cannot be controlled, bought or sold, as your magic is your own. It is YOU. You are your own magic. Your own vibrational signature. Your energy and power. Your free will and your choice. Witchcraft is prayer, petitioning, ceremony and spells that use many different ingredients as all practioners are different. It is a personal practice. Candles, herbs, incense, cauldrons, oils, salts, petitions, moon water etc. are very common ingredients.
I have heard of white Witches, black Witches, green Witches, banishing Witches, cottage Witches, hedge Witches, wiccan Witches, kitchen Witches, sea Witches, glamour Witches, moon Witches, chaos Witches, elemental Witches, Christian Witches. People have worked with nature and the seasonal changes because that is natural. They use the elements. They use tradition and ritual. Each person and practice is truly different. When people used to call me a Witch I would say I'm a Christian, because I am a Christian. Then I started answering them with only "bad Witchs are ugly!" These days when people call me a Witch I just say thank you so much!
Many Blessings
Love, Anne
